Inspired by her time spent teaching Latin American History, Alejandra has written a new one-act opera entitled El rebozo with composer Carlos Castro, which will be workshopped with Austin Opera in Spring of 2024.

El rebozo centers a Mexican family living in Chicago during the time of the Great Depression. This family experiences massive pressure from all sides to leave the country, from coercion to physical threats, depicting a part of our history called the Mexican Repatriation. In the midst of this strife, the family's middle son, Gabriel, has gone missing and his brother René is doing everything he can to find him.

In the end, the family is faced with a terrible choice after sacrificing everything they have--and it still may not be enough.
